For one Ridgefield family, winter mornings start on the ice. Instead of rushing out the door, Taylor Keating’s kids lace up their skates and head to the backyard rink. And when they miss the school bus, it is usually for a good reason: they’re already outside, making the most of winter.

The Keating family set up their rink in early December and it quickly became the centerpiece of their winter. By Christmas, the ice was ready and since then it has been in constant use. What started as a surprise the kids couldn’t believe has become a daily ritual and a neighborhood gathering spot. For Keating, the rink represents more than convenience. It brings a sense of nostalgia. Their home once belonged to her grandmother and was a place where family and cousins would regularly gather. Now, with her own children inviting friends over, the backyard has come full circle, becoming a space for connection and shared memories.

The practical benefits are just as meaningful. With one child playing travel hockey and another taking skating lessons, Keating previously spent hours driving between rinks that often had limited availability. On top of that, she is caring for a 6-month-old. Having a rink just steps away has made daily life easier and far less stressful.

After-school skates, spontaneous visits from neighbors, and long afternoons outside have become routine, with the family using a homemade ice resurfacer to keep the rink smooth and ready for play.

There are still competitive moments between siblings, and not every game ends happily, but for Keating, those moments are part of the experience as the rink keeps the kids active, outdoors, and creating lasting memories right at home.
