Unfortunately, not everybody can enjoy the sweet sounds of skates on an ice rink in their backyard in North America.

To own a backyard rink, you must live in a region cold enough to get consistent ice and have a yard that can appropriately accommodate the rink.

Even if you meet the temperature and yard criteria, many ODR (outdoor rink) owners struggle to maintain consistent ice. Some give up on the idea altogether after an unsuccessful season.

We’re going to give you all the inside information we’ve learned over the years as an NHL-licensed backyard ice rink manufacturer so you can assess:

  1. Whether you can have an ice rink in the first place.

  2. How to set it up/maintain it to get the best experience possible. 

How Cold for a Backyard Ice Rink? 

Before you do anything else, you must determine whether you live in a region cold enough to accommodate a backyard rink.

Our rule of thumb is that you should live in a region where the high temperature is well below freezing for at least three consecutive days each winter. 

In the United States, this typically includes New England, the Upper Midwest, portions of the Plains, and most mountainous zones. 

You can find people in other states like Missouri and Ohio (and even the hills of West Virginia) who have successfully built and maintained a rink. It really depends on the weather in a given year. Virtually all regions in Canada can support a backyard ice rink. 

Tip: If you don’t live in a region where the high temperature is well below freezing for at least three consecutive days each winter, we’d recommend not investing in a backyard ice rink. You’ll be spending more time maintaining the rink than playing on it. Instead, look into a street hockey rink, which can be used year-round regardless of weather. 

How Flat Does Your Backyard Need to Be?

Next up, you must ensure the slope of your yard can accommodate a rink.

To do this, you want to find a spot that is flat or mostly level with no more than 10 inches of slope in any direction.

Tip: You can use a laser level or a simple manual measurement method (see the video below) to measure your yard slope.

Slope is something almost everybody underestimates. If you have too much slope, it means you’ll have one end with deep water/ice and one end with barely any coverage at all. This can lead to blowouts, like shown below on an EZ ICE rink

You can still own a rink if your yard slope is greater than 10 inches, but you will need to build your boards higher and add substantial bracing on the deep end. This can be a risky effort since water pressure can build up at the deep end, which can result in a catastrophic blowout.

Deeper water also compromises the surface’s playability since there is less exposed board for quality puck play and rebounds.

Measuring slope and finding the right spot in your yard can be a complicated matter. If you have an uneven yard and are unsure whether it can accommodate a rink, reach out and we’re happy to help lead you to the best solution. 

How Deep Should a Backyard Ice Rink Be?

We recommend a minimum ice thickness of four inches at the shallowest end of your rink, accounting for any slope in your yard. 

However, it's important to distinguish between the depth of the water you initially fill your rink with and the thickness of the finished skating surface when planning for how deep a backyard rink should be. They are not the same thing.

The amount of water needed to fill your rink depends on factors like its size and the slope of your yard. 

A perfectly level yard requires less water than one with a noticeable grade, since the low end needs additional water (more details in the next section).

Once your rink is frozen, what matters most is the thickness of the ice itself. 

Ice that is at least four inches thick provides a strong, durable base that can better withstand skating, pucks, changing weather conditions and routine maintenance throughout the season.

A thinner ice surface is more susceptible to cracks, soft spots and damage after warm days or heavy use. Building a solid foundation at the start of the season will make it much easier to maintain smooth, skateable ice all winter long.

Should You Build Ice in Thin Layers?

When it comes to building and resurfacing ice, there are several approaches you can take. 

Some homeowners build their initial ice base by adding multiple thin layers of water, allowing each layer to freeze before applying the next. 

This is because the layered ice is less likely to trap unfrozen water beneath the surface. That trapped water may eventually be pushed up and around the edges of the ice as the increasing weight of the ice block displaces the water underneath. This can create rough, uneven areas that are difficult to repair.

Some ODR choose to do one single, carefully timed flood. This works best when the weather is reliably cold, since a warm spell mid-freeze can undo the progress.

You’ll find advocates for both the thin-layer method and the single-flood method. Regardless of which one you choose, patience is the key to success. 

Rushing the process by adding too much water at once or skating before the ice has fully frozen can lead to a weaker surface that's more prone to cracking and requires more maintenance throughout the season.

How Much Water for a Backyard Ice Rink?

To give you an estimate for how much water you need for a backyard rink, below are water usage estimates for our Starter and Standard Rinks. 

*These estimates were calculated by filling to a minimum depth of 4" using a standard 5/8" diameter garden hose delivering about 10 gallons per minute.

Starter Rink (17' x 35')

  • Level yard: 1,470 gallons / about 2.5 hours

  • Max slope yard: 2,600 gallons / about 4.5 hours

Here’s a YardRink Starter Rink for reference:

Standard Rink (26' x 53')

  • Level yard: 3,400 gallons / about 6 hours

  • Max slope yard: 6,000 gallons / about 10 hours

*Before you start filling your rink, make sure each panel is filled first. This typically takes about 40 seconds per panel and helps the structure hold its shape once the water goes in.

The slope of your yard, in particular, is a major factor in how much water you’ll need. When a yard is completely level, water sets in evenly. This matters because you only need enough water to reach a consistent depth across the whole rink.

When your yard is sloped, the low end fills up long before the high end reaches the same depth. This will result in significantly more water use (and more time, potentially an extra 2-4 hours) to get an even playing surface.

For most homes, an outdoor spigot and garden hose will work. The biggest thing to plan for is the time commitment, especially for sloped yards and larger rinks. 

If your water comes from a well, or you're worried about running your well dry with a multi-hour fill, some rink owners opt for a water delivery service instead, which can fill the rink faster and take the strain off your home's water system. 

A water delivery service can cost hundreds of dollars, so make sure to assess whether it’s worth it for you.

How Long Does It Take for a Backyard Ice Rink to Freeze?

You’ll learn after one season just how important timing is, especially when you get ready to freeze the rink.

A good general rule of thumb we tell people is to wait until after the leaves have fallen, but don't wait until the ground itself has fully frozen. 

Once the ground freezes solid, leveling your yard, driving stakes into the ground or making any last adjustments to your setup becomes much more difficult.

To reiterate our temperature point from earlier, most backyard rink builders won't start filling until they see at least three consecutive days of daytime highs staying below freezing. Ideally, nighttime lows would also drop well below that. 

Colder, consistent temperatures freeze water faster and produce stronger, smoother ice than a rink built during a warm-cold-warm swing. 

In consistently cold conditions (around 0–10°F), a 4" base can form in just a few days. In milder cold (upper teens to 20s°F), that same 4" can take a week or more, since ice growth slows significantly as temperatures approach freezing.

So when is it actually safe to skate? Ice depth matters more than timelines, as a rink can "look" frozen but actually be dangerously thin underneath. Before lacing up, check the actual thickness of your ice rather than guessing. Coach Jeremy showed how to test your ice thickness before skating with a YardRink in the video below:

Pro tip: If your ice hasn't reached a safe skating depth yet, keep flooding in thin layers. It’s worth waiting a few extra days to get a better (and safer) rink all winter. Remember: patience is your best friend when flooding a rink

Does Shade Make a Difference?

Where you choose to place your rink can have a major impact on your rink’s lifespan. In particular, choosing a shady spot in your yard (if possible) can make a big difference in maintaining ice longevity. 

Shade helps preserve ice quality by slowing the melt-refreeze cycle. Ice degrades fastest when it's exposed to direct sunlight. Even in below-freezing air temperatures, sunlight can warm the surface of the ice enough to soften it. 

A shaded rink stays more consistently frozen throughout the day, which means smoother, harder ice and less resurfacing work for you.

Direct afternoon sun can be the enemy of a skating surface. 

Even on a cold day, a few hours of direct afternoon sun can noticeably soften the top layer of your ice. This leaves slush or chippy ice that can ruin your evening skate plans. This is why we recommend installing your rink in full shade, if possible. 

If not, some owners have used UV-blocking shade cloths, mesh tarps or reflective insulation rolled over exposed sunspots to preserve ice quality. 

We tested reflective insulation on a YardRink Junior Rink (pictured below) to see if it would reliably preserve skatable ice. This included getting the reflective foil insulation, rolling it over the rink, cutting it via electric scissors to fit it to the rink’s dimensions and placing a few weights over it on windy days.

After about two weeks of warmer weather in the Massachusetts area, we found that the reflective foil insulation helped keep the ice skatable even with temperatures staying above freezing.

If you don’t want to use a DIY solution, you can also skate earlier in the day or resurface after the afternoon sun has set. 

DIY vs. Backyard Ice Rink Kits

So far, we’ve covered factors that all backyard ice rinks have in common. Now we’re going to talk about the type of rink (DIY vs. preassembled rink kits) you can choose, as this will make a huge difference in terms of effort, playability and durability.

Both have their pros and cons, and we’ve written an entire guide on how to build a backyard ice rink that we highly recommend reading through before making a decision. Below are the key points to take away if you want the short version: 

Time and effort. A DIY build can take multiple weekends of planning, sourcing materials and building from scratch. A rink kit uses pre-fitted components designed to be assembled quickly, potentially in under an hour.

Durability. Homemade rinks can be more prone to blowouts, especially on sloped yards where water pressure pushes against poorly braced walls. This means having to drain, re-brace, and refill mid-season. High-quality kits are engineered specifically to handle that pressure and hold up season after season.

Setup and materials. DIY builds typically rely on improvised materials like hardware-store lumber and a tarp installed inside the boards, where it's exposed to skates, sticks, and shovels. Pre-built kits use liners, brackets and boards designed specifically for rinks. For example, YardRink’s outdoor rinks come with rounded corners for realistic puck movement and a tarp positioned outside the boards.

Long-term value. DIY rinks are usually less expensive than pre-built kits upfront, potentially costing under a thousand dollars. There are potential hidden costs that can add up over time through torn liners, repairs and maintenance hours. Kits cost more initially but are built to be reassembled with minimal repairs year after year.

Bottom line: if you enjoy hands-on projects and have time to spare, a DIY rink can be a rewarding tradition. If you want dependable ice time with less troubleshooting and better playability, a rink kit is the more practical route.

What's the Best Size for a Backyard Ice Rink?

After deciding on a pre-assembled rink kit or the DIY route, you’ll need to figure out the best size for you.

Your yard plays a big role in this decision. Generally, you want to choose the biggest available area in your yard (under shade if possible) so you can maximize your rink area. But you don’t necessarily have to choose the biggest rink at first. 

If you’re buying a rink kit, we actually recommend buying the size that fits your family’s current situation, and upgrading as needed later on.

For example, if you have two children between the ages of 5 and 8, a smaller rink (like 17’ x 35’) would be more than enough to start with.

You can add to your rink’s size in the future as your kids grow, which can save you money upfront and ensure that your kids will use the rink often enough to justify a larger rink before actually purchasing one. 

With DIY rinks, upgrading a rink won’t be as seamless, although it’s possible. You just have to be willing to buy the extra materials and put in the extra assembly effort season after season.

Another thing with rink sizes to consider is that bigger rinks require more maintenance.

A larger rink typically:

  • Takes longer to assemble and disassemble.

  • Needs more frequent clearing and resurfacing. 

  • Requires significantly more water to fill (potentially around double the time of a smaller rink). 

To find the right size, think about any constraints your yard has, then figure out what works with your family’s current skating goals and budget.

Remember, bigger is not always better for every family when it comes to rinks!

Does your build area get at least partial shade, or shelter from direct afternoon sun?

Full-sun rinks are still doable. Consider constructing a DIY shade solution, resurfacing more often or skating earlier in the day.

Maintenance Commitment

Are you prepared to shovel, resurface, and check ice thickness regularly throughout the season?
