Two weeks after installing our YardRink, my three-year-old son ditched his skate trainer and started skating on his own.
That moment alone made the entire decision worth it.
He had already started falling in love with hockey at our local town rink, and with his passion growing, my wife and I knew we wanted to support it the right way.
Gretzky and the NHL’s Connections
We began researching backyard rink options and discovered YardRink after seeing Wayne Gretzky’s appearance on CNBC. Seeing “The Great One” associated with the brand definitely caught my attention.
As I looked deeper, the NHL connection, customizable decals, curved boards, and overall design stood out. The pricing also made sense, and after speaking with the YardRink Customer Care team, we decided to go with a larger rink during their Black Friday promotion.
A Neighborhood Hangout
From day one, it’s been more than just a rink. It’s become a gathering place. My son went from learning to skate to constantly asking when hockey season starts because he can’t wait to play. Family, friends – even grown adults! – have all jumped on the ice. Everyone is having a blast on the rink.
What surprised me most was the community impact. During setup, several DIY rink dads stopped by to ask about our YardRink. That led us to become part of a local backyard rink club, and now my son is skating with older kids in the neighborhood who play organized hockey. Our rink has even motivated other families in the neighborhood to consider purchasing one. We’ve had neighbors we’d never met call to ask about using the rink for stick and skate practice, which is not typically available at local rinks.
It’s amazing to see how one decision has helped grow my son’s confidence, strengthened neighborhood connections, and created a place where everyone wants to gather.
This year, with my son even more comfortable on the ice, we’re expecting an even bigger season and we can’t wait!
